NoPS2
Description[edit | edit source]
Some early PlayStation 3 models, particularly the A and B Models, feature built-in hardware for PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility. However, over time, certain users have reported a loss of PS2 functionality—even while PS1 games and regular PS3 functions continue to work normally. This issue is often linked to a hardware fault rather than software or firmware problems.
This page is dedicated to exploring the possible causes of PS2 compatibility failure in backwards compatible PS3 systems. It includes known hardware issues that may trigger the problem, such as damage to the Emotion Engine or Graphics Synthesizer chips, faulty solder joints, or degraded capacitors. You'll also find suggested diagnostics, repair methods, and community-tested solutions for restoring compatibility where possible.
There are two different types of NoPS2, there is NoPS2_Menu where if you get a black screen and press the home button on your controller, you will be able to see a menu on your screen that you can navigate. Then there is NoPS2_noMenu where if you press the home button, nothing happens, as if the system completely locks up and needs a forced shutdown.
The estimated time from recognizing the PS2 game to displaying the "Playstation 2" logo is approximately 13 seconds.
Component Involved | NoPS2_Menu/NoPS2_noMenu |
---|---|
C6611, C7002 | Main symptom (NoPS2_Menu): Black screen immediately after identifying a PS2 game, whether on CD or DVD. Controller synchronizes and accesses the menu when the PS button is pressed.
Additional symptoms: The menu may flash in some situations, as if there was an update in the images. Device: CECHB01 Cause: Capacitors C6611 (10 uf x 6.3 V) and C7002 (15 uf) shorted, leaving the +1.8 V_EEGS_VDDIO voltage below normal. A thermal camera was used to identify the shorted capacitors. |
KES-400 (To Confirm) | Main symptom (NoPS2_NoMenu): Black screen after recognizing a PS2 game. Controller syncs but no menu appears when pressing the PS button.
Additional symptom: If you remove the disc, the controller turns off and after a few seconds the PS3 returns to the XMB and displays error 80028F17. Sometimes when you press Eject to remove the disc and then simply press the power button, the screen may blinks quickly. Device: CECHB01 (Evilnat 9.42, PS3 dinamic fan 60°C, PS2 fan 50% speed) Probable cause: KES-400. Blu-Ray discs were not being recognized and when testing adjustments on the KEM-400 block, the Blu-Ray discs began to be recognized, the PS2 games continued to be recognized but did not boot, remaining on a black screen. With other adjustments, the PS2 games started to boot again and the Blu-Ray media were not recognized. |
