The updater will download the PSP2UPDAT.PUP on your Vita system, unpack psp2swu.self (the actual updater/flasher) to the ud0 partition, and copy the whole PUP to it. Once finished it will flag "Update Mode" and reboot. Instead of booting to shell the psp2swu is loaded (either in GUI or CUI mode). Then it unpacks and flashes partition images (os0 and slb2 images are flashed to swap banks), flashes new syscon fw, swaps banks, flashes new f00d keys and reboots.
