Modchips

Game burnt to disc.

Modchips were common in the original PlayStation, allowing players to bypass region lockout, and to play burnt CDs, and for launching homebrew applications/games.

Exterior modifications

Exterior modifications are typically case modifications, made in order for the console to look more visually appealing.
